Barbara Shema

Artist

Barbara returned to Pittsburgh in 2013 after living in Budapest Hungary for 2 years teaching English as a Foreign Language. During that time, she left her art-making behind, but took her camera. Upon returning, she has been exploring various art processes – mixed media photo collage and mixed media painting on paper.

Prior to going to Budapest, she lived in Albany NY, where she was a member of Upstate Artist Guild, River Front Art Cooperative, and Saratoga Arts Council.

Prior to Albany, she lived in Providence RI where she received funding through the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts to facilitate weekly art workshops for newly arrived refugees and immigrants at a community literacy center. She exhibited her work at the Holden Street Gallery, Gallery Night Providence, DeBlois Gallery.

When Barbara returned to Pittsburgh, her art had been available at GalleriE CHIZ and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts gift shop until their closings in 2017 and 2019.

Barbara has an undergraduate degree in Art Education from Indiana University of PA and a graduate degree in Educational Leadership from Carlow University.

She is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists.
